Dedicated to Mom - Make a keepsake pillow that is two gifts in one! +Video

I believe handmade gifts, in any size or form. They can be as simple as a note on a piece of paper , an elaborate design taking hours to make, or somewhere in between.  It doesn’t matter, it’s the thought and the love behind it that counts.

I’ve inherited a lot of fabric, buttons and other miscellaneous sewing notions from my Mom.

As a tribute to her and all the things she’s done, I designed a keepsake pillow.  Although I can’t give it to her, since she’s passed, I did create it with bits and pieces that were hers, so it truly is a keepsake and a reminder of how special she is to me.

Whenever you can - give handmade!

Cut a heart from cardboard using the #3 (with 1 being the smallest) hearts 1 die and a #2 heart from muslin with the Artisan-Xplorer™ machine.

Cut two circles from patterned fabric with the #3 die from the Circles 1 die.

Paint the cardboard heart white on both sides.  Let dry.

Apply a small amount of glue to one side of heart and attach fiber fill.

Cut two squares of fabric larger than heart.  Insert heart between layers and stitch around edges.  Cut out around heart leaving approximately 1/4” border.

Sew small muslin heart to front of heart.

Cut a spiral in the circles.  Begin rolling until you reach the center.  Stitch the rolled flower to secure.  Repeat for number of flowers desired.

Collage roses, buttons, lace and additional embellishments onto heart and secure with stitching or glue.  Add a pin back to the back side of heart.

To create pillow:

Cut one rectangle 3” x 4” from muslin.  Cut 2 rectangles 6” x 5” from coordinating fabric.
Center and stitch the muslin rectangle onto the coordinating fabric rectangle.

Stamp sentiment onto muslin with ink.

With wrong sides together, match the edges of the larger rectangle and sew around three sides approximately 1/2” inch from edge.  Stuff.  Sew remaining side closed.  Trim the edges even if needed.

Attach quilted heart. And sew a twine ribbon onto the back if desired, so it can hang from a shelf or doorknob.
